Frodo version 10
Having got a good sun burn after spending all afternoon outside yesterday, I'll be cautious with the sun today. So instead, I've been staying indoors and finishing up the last changes for version 11 of Frodo/Wii and baking bread this morning.

The bread features walnuts, lingon berries and apricots, but most readers of this blog are probably more interested in the new Frodo features. There are a couple of those:
  • You can now send messages over the network to the other player if you have a USB keyboard (or are running frodo on your computer). Useful for taunting your peer.

  • Holger Eilts has redesigned the menus from scratch, and the result is (in my view) a lot more intuitive and friendly than before.

  • You can now select which D64 file to load from the menus

  • Apricots

  • The file browser supports subdirectories

  • I've built it against Daryl Borths revived SDL port, which means that sound is again crisp and clear.

I'll release at least one version more (I got a bug report shortly after uploading v10), but in most aspects I now feel I'm done with the Frodo port to the Wii.

Possible bug

Hi Simon,

Great work with Frodo for Wii. The enhancements in sound and menu interface are great. Just one question: At least in version 9 and 10 I have noticed a strange behavior - when pointing to the outer borders of the screen (outside the C64-border) with the wiimote, there is a small mouse pointer, and small boxes are drawn to the screen. The boxes stay on screen until I restart the emulator.

Is this a bug? Is there any need for the emulator to check the position of the wiimote pointer? Would it be way to save a few CPU cycles (for graphics which still is a bit laggy) if the wiimote IR-function was turned off?

I fully understand if you feel you're done with the Frodo project now - I just wish someone else would take over then, because I will miss the regular updates :-)

That might well be - the newer SDL includes "mouse emulation" (not used by Frodo). However, the graphics are lagging for other reasons (it does that on my host machine as well).

Ok - even if it does not make any difference in emulation speed, would it be difficult to disable the mouse emulation in the next (and last) version?

The USB keyboard support is still there!

Try unplugging your keyboard and plug it back in again and see if that helps.

That would be an SDL thing, but sure - it should not be that difficult.

I would really like to thank you for all your hard work on this emulator, I love it!

I've read that you're now looking for some other recreational fun, and if you love making ports of emulators, why not look into the posibillity of porting uae to the wii?

Sure, someone else has done it, but it's not finished, and my guess is that it will never be. Since the author doesn't respond to mail, and there hasn't been any updates ever.

Gouky's version is violating the GPL, since no code is available. The GUI is terrible, and there's not good enough compatibillity with software and kickroms. Also, the mouse emulation sucks in games like Lemmings and Cannon Fodder.

This is not a request, just a wish:)

I have considered looking at UAE, but not got further than uncompressing it and compiling it for Linux (i.e., nowhere). However, with the new SDL-Wii work from tantric et al, porting UAE should now be much less work so I don't think it's particularly difficult for anyone to do.

I've mailed "Gouky" about the GPL violation but not got any answer.

The real wet dream in this, would be to get Amiga PPC instructions to run on the Wii's PPC in native mode, 68k emulated, and graphic and sound chipsets (including AGA) emulated.
This would make a Wii with 2 wiimotes and 2 classic controllers into an accellerated Amiga 1200 with 2 Joysticks:)

Your wish is my command ;-)

I've setup a googlecode project for UAE-wii at http://uae-wii.googlecode.com and imported the E-UAE source. I don't promise making any progress on this, but interested developers should contact me to get commit access to the repository.

The work should be based on SDL.

Try porting Exult?

Thanks for all the work on Frodo and making it look and run so beautiful! My favorite homebrew!!!
shameless plug:
If you feel bored you could take a look at porting Exult to the Wii. Exult is an sdl-based engine for the Ultima 7 games by Origin. http://exult.sf.net
I'm the document/FAQ writer for this project and so I'm available for any help you might need :)
But anyway, I'll take a look at the porting guide you mentioned here, myself.

We've been in contect before via email as well.

Hmm, is there a link to some docs for tantric's sdl-work?

Not that I know of, but check the googlecode site - the issues (also closed) and changelog pretty much show the progress. It's pretty complete now and supports GX graphics, USB keyboards, exports the Wiimotes via the SDL joystick interface and has improved audio support.
